I recognize that the last post surrounding this project was in 2015, and for those casual readers its return has been alluded to many times. A man of my word, if late, always late, I present the next level of expansion.
The reality is this is the type of project that gets worked on aggressively, then something frustrates me and I ignore it for days into weeks, and weeks into months.
Several components have been repainted, to match the scheme I have designated for future loyalist Solar Auxilia and Imperialis Militia units to offset the traitorous Warp Cult and their forthcoming Word Bearer masters.
It has now grown to encompass (2) 30″x 72″ tables. The basic premise is that it is a mountain fortress leading into a mountain city. The outer walls (the Fortress Walls), represent Kalidor Gate, which will be connected to mountainous terrain. This will offset the sudden end of the models which is the only downside to monstrous model; it just ends. This will lead into a courtyard wherein there will be another set of walls and gate, leading into the mountain itself. These as can be seen are made of Bastion terrain pieces. The gate itself uses pieces of a Skyshield Landing Pad carefully cut and applied to Foam-board. Above the gate will be additional levels with ‘important’ buildings made from the Shrine of the Aquila, various City Sector Components and the tower of the Fortress of Redemption. The Fortress of Redemption tower is intended to be the Astropathic Choir. Finally the highest level of buildings will be ‘Kalidor Manor’, composed of two Chateaus from the Sarissa Precision Line. The building layouts and compositions are subject to change the addition or removal of a variety of Games Workshop, Forge World and third party laser cut HDF kits. Their placement currently is simply for the sake of my own visual cues.
The mountains themselves are a combination of different thicknesses of insulation foam that have been mounted to 1/4″ hardboard with wall filler and insulation foam spray added where appropriate.
This project, although very much alive, I accept will take years. It serves as a break in between model painting projects such as the Warp Cult. I should indicate that this is only the beginning. A decade from now (facetious yet potentially truthful) it will be expanded to encompass many, many more tables of the same size. Before the Fortress Walls will be defensive position. Before the defensive positions will be a city. Before the city will be additional defensive positions. Before the defensive positions will be ‘no man’s land’ and before that will be a Mechanicum Forge Sector of sorts. It exists in my head, and the basement space is present.
This project has and continues to push my own skill-set forward with requirements to learn all manner of new techniques; most important of these was a series of hot wire foam cutters.
As I get closer to the shaping of the mountainous terrain, cast rocks and cliffs will be attached to add another degree of detail. These are based upon a variety of Woodland Scenic molds. They also represent the first contribution of my three-year old son to the hobby!
These were cast by him (with a tiny bit of help from Daddy)!
As always, questions, concerns, conundrums, and existential dilemmas are always welcome.
In the next week or so I will be digging into some of the techniques used to change the old copper from the previous incarnation of the walls to the new metallic blue.
