I suppose it is time for a brief update on my most ambitious project, which also doubles as the bane of my miniature-addicted world; The Fortress Walls. My time is currently being split between my AdMech force and this.
This has been a project of experimentation. First up we have the ‘steeples’ if you will. Both painted, although only one has been treated with an oil wash. I am uncertain if I like the final product and while I percolate on ways to revise or undo it should I come to a final decisions of ‘nope’, I have moved onto some of the other components.
Next up we have the main door which can comfortable fit a Baneblade through the doorway. I have settled on airbrushing Leadbelcher although I have run out of the colour in the meantime. Once replenished it will receive another coat, and I will mask out the eagle and then spray copper upon it to match the ‘steeples’.
The Walls and related components require some final details to be painted (such as control panels), before they will be ready for a Wash. I suspect I will keep it fairly simple and dry brush after the wash and with the exception of some extra TLC for the fine details, leave it at that.
I have yet to do much of anything with the small components such as Doorways, turrets and Hydra guns but their treatment will likely be similar. Some will likely incorporate blue to break up the various grey colors and to tie it better with my Astra Militarum themes that will be using grey and blue.
More updates to follow. Questions, comments, conundrums, and advice always welcome!
Regards,
Mr. Kalidor
Cool. This will look amazing when complete

I too recently got my hands on one of these monstrocities, cost me around $600 USD.
I have noticed in some of your pics and what I have, some pieces are a bit warped, and most of the bottoms are not flat/smooth/uniform
Any recommendations on how to address these issues, i dont want to file away every pieces bottom until they are all uniform height, but i hate gaps

This was and continues to be a beast of a model. Some components I have accepted are so warped I will not even be using them. The model comes with guard rails for the rear side of the walkways. They at least for me are beyond salvaging and I have decided simply not to use them.
A lot of it will come down to a judgement call. The hydra turrets for me are warped and not straight. I tinkered with the warm water method to bend them back into shape but realized I would likely break them.
As for the overall fit, that was by far the hardest. Probably the most time consuming portion of this project has been grinding, cutting and trying to make the pieces fit. Hours were spent with a dremel. If you have access to one it will make your life much easier but be weary of the dust. Usually every component that needed work was first hit with a dremel and then files or sanded after. It is very time consuming.
There is also about two tubes of silicone caulking applied by a caulking gun throughout all of the walls and the towers in an effort to hold it together securely and minimize gaps. There will likely be gaps at the end, but as a result of the shapes of various edges, corners and outcrops they should not be too noticeable.
I hope that helps. Let me know if you need any more information or run into any snags.
